DOCUMENT:Q237832 16-MAY-2002 [homegame] TITLE :Asheron's Call: Objects in Game Appear White PRODUCT :Microsoft Home Games PROD/VER::1.0 OPER/SYS: KEYWORDS:kbdisplay igz kbimu msgame kbgraphxlinkcriticalkbfaq ====================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The information in this article applies to: - Microsoft Asheron's Call, version 1.0 - Microsoft Asheron's Call: Dark Majesty, version 1.0 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SYMPTOMS ======== When you play Asheron's Call in 3D Accelerated mode, you may encounter one of the following symptoms: - Items, characters, or landscape objects may appear white. - You receive the following message in a chat windows: Low 3D texture memory detected, which may result in white textures in the view window. Go to the Sound/Graphics Options panel and try lowering the texture resolution settings. CAUSE ===== This behavior can occur if your video adapter does not have enough video memory to display all of the textures correctly. RESOLUTION ========== To resolve this issue, reduce the level of texture detail in the game. To do this: 1. On the Asheron's Call game screen, click Options ([GRAPHIC:the green triangle with two check boxes]) in the lower right corner of the screen. 2. Click the Sound/Graphics tab. 3. Select lower values for the Landscape, ClipMap, RGBA, and Indexed settings. The following table lists the recommended texture detail settings for video adapters with different amounts of video memory. +-----------------------------------------------------+ | Video Memory | Landscape | ClipMap | RGBA | Indexed | +-----------------------------------------------------+ | 32 MB | Full | Full | Full | Full | +-----------------------------------------------------+ | 16 MB | 1/2 | Full | Full | 1/2 | +-----------------------------------------------------+ | 12 MB | 1/2 | Full | 1/2 | 1/2 | +-----------------------------------------------------+ | 8 MB | 1/4 | 1/2 | 1/2 | 1/2 | +-----------------------------------------------------+ | 6 MB | 1/4 | 1/2 | 1/2 | 1/4 | +-----------------------------------------------------+ | 4 MB | 1/4 | 1/4 | 1/4 | 1/4 | +-----------------------------------------------------+ NOTE: Some video adapters such as 3Dfx Voodoo-based video adapters can reserve as much as 4 megabytes (MB) of video memory as a frame buffer. This reduces the amount of video memory available for textures. As an example, if a video adapter with 12 MB of video memory reserves 4 MB of memory as a frame buffer, only 8 MB of video memory is available for textures. 4. Click Apply. 5. If the issue continues to occur, repeat these steps to select lower texture settings. MORE INFORMATION ================ To determine how much video memory is installed on your video adapter, use the DirectX Diagnostic Tool: 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. In the Open box, type "dxdiag.exe" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK. 3. Click the Display tab. 4. Under Device, look at the Approx. Total Memory line to determine the total amount of memory installed on your video adapter. 5. Click Exit.
