SYMPTOMS
========

When you attempt to install Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002, you may receive an
error message similar to the following:

   Setup encountered an error writing to file....

CAUSE
=====

This behavior can occur in the following situation:

 - Microsoft Windows is not configured to automatically manage virtual memory
   settings.

   -or-

 - The Temp folder is full or contains corrupted files.

   -or-

 - The Windows swap file is damaged.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this issue, follow these steps.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following
steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product
documentation to complete these steps.

Configure Windows to Manage Virtual Memory
------------------------------------------

1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click
   System.

2. Click the Performance tab, and then click Virtual Memory.

3. Click "Let Windows manage my virtual memory settings", and then click OK.

4. Click Close, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the
   computer.

Remove Files from the Temp Folder
---------------------------------

Delete the contents of the C:\Windows\Temp folder. To do this, follow these
steps:

1. Start Windows Explorer, and then browse to the following location

   C:\<Windows>\Temp

   where <Windows> is the folder in which Windows is installed.

2. On the Edit menu, click Select All.

3. On the File menu, click Delete.

4. If you receive a "Confirm Multiple File Delete" message, click Yes. If you
   receive a Confirm File Delete message, click "Yes to All".

5. Quit Windows Explorer, and then restart the computer.

Rebuild the Windows Swap File
-----------------------------

If the issue is not resolved, the Windows swap file may be damaged. To rebuild
the Windows swap file, follow the steps for your operating system.

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me):

1. Insert a Windows Me Startup disk in the floppy disk drive. To create a
   Windows Me Startup disk, follow these steps:

   a. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click
      Add/Remove Programs.

   b. Click the Startup Disk tab, and then click Create Disk.

   c. Follow the onscreen instructions to create a Windows Me Startup disk.

2. On the Start menu, click Shut Down. Click Restart, and then click OK.

3. Select "Minimal Boot", and then press ENTER.

4. At the command prompt, change to the Windows folder by typing the following
   commands and pressing ENTER after each command

   <drive>:
   cd <drive>:\Windows

   where <drive> is the drive letter that contains the Windows folder.
   Typically, this is drive C.

5. To delete the swap file, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

   del Win386.swp

6. After you delete the swap file, restart Windows Me.

Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition and Microsoft Windows 98:

1. Click Start, and then click Shut Down.

2. Click "Restart in MS-DOS mode," and then click OK.

3. At the command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you
   type each line:

   cd\windows
   del win386.swp
   exit

4. After you delete the swap file, restart Windows 98.
