SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Commerce Server version 2.0, the following error may occur:

Cannot expand templates Unspecified Error

CAUSE

Microsoft Commerce Server 2.0 is only supported on Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 1.5c. Microsoft Commerce Server 2.0 does not recognize return codes that MDAC 2.0 supports, which causes the Commerce Server 2.0 Setup program to fail.

Commerce Server 2.0 is not supported on MDAC version 2.0 and later.

WORKAROUND

Upgrade to Site Server 3.0, Commerce Edition. MDAC 1.5c and Site Server 2.0 are not Y2K compliant. Additionally, MDAC 2.0 cannot be uninstalled.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Commerce Server 2.0.
