PUT Command with HTTP Causes File Deletion 401.1 Error When Copying File

SYMPTOMS

When you use a PUT command with HTTP to copy a file from a browser to an IIS 4.0 computer, if the file is copied to a drive other than a system drive, the file is deleted and a 401.1 Access Denied error is returned. The file deletion may take up to 45 seconds to occur, due to queue management in IIS.


RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows NT service pack.

Do not use a PUT command with HTTP when copying files to a non-system drive.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Internet Information Server version 4.0.
