SUMMARY
This article discusses the use of Personalization and Membership of Site
Server version 3.0 with third-party LDAP servers.
MORE INFORMATION
The Membership system in Site Server and Microsoft Commercial Internet
System (MCIS) delivers an LDAP service. Although this is a generic LDAP
service, various features such as Access Control Lists (ACLs), the
Directory Information Tree (DIT), and schema are specifically tuned to
support Microsoft Windows NT Server and related Microsoft products. The
following list describes some of these features:
- Supports Microsoft Windows NT authentication extensions
- Maps into Windows NT group access control
- Works with the Personalization subsystem in Site Server 3.0
- Exports user profile data in the Site Server 3.0 Analysis
subsystem
- Provides scriptable user data access via the Active User Object (AUO)
- Works with various Site Server 3.0 Microsoft Management Console
(MMC) snap-in tools, such as the Membership Directory Manager (MDM).
The above features were not tested with non-Microsoft LDAP servers.
Although it may work, using the Site Server Membership component with
third-party LDAP servers is an unsupported configuration.
NOTE: Any authorized LDAP client (one written by Microsoft or one written
by a vendor independent of Microsoft) can access the LDAP service provided
by Site Server version 3.0.
