SYMPTOMS
After you install the Proxy Server 2.0 Winsock proxy client, one of the

- The following error message appears after
the browser is restarted:
Internet Explorer 3.02 "An unexpected error has occurred" please
restart Internet Explorer
-OR-
- An "Internet Explorer Auto-Proxy
Script download" dialog box appears,
stating the following:
Due to network or related problems, Internet Explorer could not
download your Auto-Proxy Script. Do you wish to continue with
standard proxy settings?
Answering "No" produces the error message
above.
-OR-
- In Internet Explorer 4.0 for Windows 98, the
error is:
No query string
Your client is not allowed to access the requested object.
CAUSE
The error message may be caused by one of the following:
- The server specified in the URL for the
script file is down.
- Network problems are prohibiting the client from communicating with
the
server.
- A problem such as permissions is preventing the script from
downloading
to Internet Explorer.
WORKAROUND
Contact the system administrator to find out whether the server is down or
network problems exist.
To disable the Autoconfig file, do the following in the Internet Explorer
browser:
- Click View and then click Options.
- Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Automatic Configuration
tab.
- Delete the contents of the URL box and click OK to continue.
- Click the Connection tab and enter a valid proxy server address (for
example, http://<servername> on port
80).
- Click OK.
This configuration disables the JavaScript and allows the standard proxy
settings to be used.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION
When installing the Winsock Proxy Client, Internet Explorer clients may be
configured to use a proxy autoconfiguration script. This option is
disabled by default during the proxy server setup, but it may be enabled
at any time, which causes the Winsock Proxy Client to configure Internet
Explorer automatically.
This file, written in JavaScript, is downloaded to the client every time a
Web browser is opened. This is designed to improve browser performance and
to update browser configuration parameters. The script is executed against
every URL that the browser requests.
