Internal Proxy Clients Cannot See Reverse Proxied Web Sites

SYMPTOMS

When an internal proxy client attempts to connect through a proxy server to a reverse proxied Web site that is mapped by the same Proxy Server computer, the default home page of the Proxy Server is returned to the client.

CAUSE

The reverse proxy feature in Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 examines the HTTP requests for reverse proxied sites to determine which network interface card (NIC) the request originated from. If the HTTP request originates from the NIC connected to the Internet, the request is serviced normally and the browser receives the home page of the reverse proxied Web site.

If the HTTP request originates from the internal NIC of the Proxy Server (from a client on the internal network), the request is not fulfilled by the Proxy Server. Instead, the home page of the Proxy Server computer is displayed.

This behavior is by design.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, connect to the Web site directly instead of attempting to connect through the Proxy Server computer. For example, use the NetBIOS name of the actual Web server or the IP address of the actual Web server on the internal network.
