BUG: SNMP Registry Entry Causes AV During SQL Server Setup

SYMPTOMS

SQL Server Setup causes an access violation (AV) during installation if the combined length of the key values under the following registry key exceeds approximately 1,000 characters:


   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SNMP\Parameters
   \ExtensionAgents

   NOTE: The above registry key is one path; it has been wrapped for
   readability.

In addition to failed Setup messages and symptoms, you may also receive other access violations or the following other error messages:

The key n, Key n, val Software\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\SNMP\CurrentVersion

The application generated an application error. The exception generated was c0000005 at address 00cb2c7a (<nosymbols>) from Dr. Watson.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, perform the following steps:

In Control Panel Add/Remove Programs, remove SNMP Agents.

If SQL Server had been installed or partially installed, remove it.

Reinstall SQL Server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server version 6.5.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem has been known to occur either during installation of SQL Server or when enabling or disabling SNMP support through the Set Server Options portion of SQL Setup.
