ID: Q202883

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

Creating multiple datasources that reference a single client configuration utility advanced entry will cause the advanced entry to be deleted.

When attempting to connect to that server you will receive the following message:

"Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 6 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNMPNTW]Specified SQL server not found. Connection failed: SQLState: '01000' SQL Server Error: 53 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNMPNTW]ConnectionOpen(CreateFile())."

CAUSE

SQL Server ODBC Driver versions 3.50.0303, 3.50.0305, 3.50.0315 or 3.60.0310 exhibit this behavior.

RESOLUTION

Upgrade the SQL Server driver to 3.60.0319 or later, or work around the problem by re-creating the advanced entry. Click the Client Configuration button in the Microsoft SQL Server DSN Configuration wizard, which runs the SQL Server Client Configuration utility.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the SQL Server ODBC Driver version 3.50.3609.

This problem was corrected in SQL Server ODBC Driver release 3.60.0319.
