FIX: Queries Using Derived Tables or GROUP BY May Cause an Access Violation

• Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5

SYMPTOMS

In rare cases, queries that require SQL Server to re-map columns to virtual tables may cause SQL Server to have a handled access violation (AV). This has only been observed when either of the following conditions us true:

• Derived tables are used.
  
  -or-



• A GROUP BY clause is used and the data being grouped comes from a view.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server version 6.5. This problem has been corrected in U.S. Service Pack 5a for Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5. For information about downloading and installing the latest SQL Server Service Pack, see http://support.microsoft.com/support/sql/.
