HOWTO: Uninstall MDAC 2.0 Components Using Clsidvw.exe

ID: Q192013

The information in this article applies to:

SUMMARY

After installing the Microsoft Data Access Component (MDAC) 2.0 from the Data Access Software Development Kit (SDK) 2.0, or from the MDAC 2.0 redistribution setups (Mdac_typ.exe, Mdac_olap.exe), no software item appears in Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box. If you re-run the Data Access SDK setup, the setup does actually allow for the removal of the run-time components.

There is, however, a utility, ClsidView, which can be used both to diagnose installation problems as well as physically remove the MDAC 2.0 components.

MDAC 2.0 includes ODBC 3.51, OLE DB 2.0, ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) 2.0 and Remote Data Service (RDS) 2.0.

MORE INFORMATION

The Microsoft Data Access Component is an operating system component similar to an operating system service pack. You cannot remove the component without replacing operating system files that were upgraded by the MDAC installer. However, there may be scenarios where you wish to remove MDAC 2.0, in which case the ClsidView utility has been updated for MDAC 2.0 and can physically uninstall the MDAC 2.0 components of your choice.

For more information about obtaining the ClsidView utility, please see the REFERENCES section.

Once you have installed the ClsIdView utility, an icon is available in your Program group. When you select ClsIdView it searches your registry and computer for existing Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) files and display the information. To display the different MDAC files by version, select the MDAC file and version from which you want information from the drop-down display in the upper middle section of the screen.

You can look at the information in a Summary view and it shows you if the components completely installed or not by selecting View, and then selecting Summary. Alternatively, in a detailed view, select View and then select Detail.

To unregister and delete the files that display, use the Summary View and click the delete button. This deletes and unregisters the files.

If you are trying to return to a previous version of the MDAC components, you must re-install the version of the components that you want to use. This behavior is by design.
