FIX: Error Clicking Back Button After Testing New DSN in ODBC Control Panel

SYMPTOMS

After going through the steps to create a new data source name (DSN), if you click the Back button after testing the connection, you receive the following error message:

An error occurred while Windows was working with the Control Panel file c:\winnt\system32\odbccp32.cpl.
This error only occurs if, while creating the DSN, you clear the check box marked Connect to SQL Server to obtain default settings for the additional configuration options. This problem occurs with the 3.70.06.23 version of the SQL Server driver, which was included with SQL Server 7.0.

To work around this problem, use either of the following:

If you have already clicked Back and have received the error message described in the SYMPTOMS section you must re-create the DSN.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server version 7.0. This problem has been corrected in U.S. Service Pack 1 for Microsoft SQL Server version 7.0. For information about downloading and installing the latest SQL Server Service Pack, see http://support.microsoft.com/support/sql/.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

  1. In Control Panel, double-click the ODBC Data Sources icon.


  2. On the User DSN tab, click Add.

    NOTE: The problem also occurs with the System and File DSNs as well.


  3. Select the SQL Server driver and click Finish.


  4. Fill in the appropriate text boxes for the new DSN, including the information for the DSN name, description, and the server to which you will connect. Then, click Next.


  5. On the next screen, enable Windows NT authentication and clear the Connect to SQL Server... check box.


  6. Click Next twice, and then click Finish.


  7. Click Test Data Source. The test should complete successfully. Click OK.


  8. Click Cancel and then click the Back button. The error occurs.
