XADM: Service Specific Error 4015 When Starting Inform

SYMPTOMS

When you start the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, you may receive Service-Specific Error 4015. Other symptoms include receiving a DS_E_COMMUNICATIONS_PROBLEM error message when you attempt to run the Microsoft Exchange Administrator program against the server. The following Application Log error may also be generated:


   Event ID 5000, Source MSExchangeIS:
   Unable to initialize the Microsoft Exchange Information
   Store Service.  Error 4015 
Service-Specific Error 4015 can also appear as 0xfaf.


CAUSE

This can occur when the Directory Store (Dir.edb) is corrupt or incomplete but appears to be started in Control Panel Services.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem:

MORE INFORMATION

When you run Setup in recovery mode (Setup /R), an incomplete Directory Store (Dir.edb) is copied from the Exchange Server CD. This Directory will start; however, it will be unusable by the Information Store. Information that the Information Store needs is not present in this Dir.edb; therefore the Information Store will not start.
