When you use Outlook Express to send messages by means of Exchange Server 5.5, you may receive the following error message:
POP3 and IMAP clients in Outlook Express may receive the same error message.An unknown error was returned from the SMTP server. Subject Subject, Account 'Sender', Server: servername, Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '505 Authentication required', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 505, Error Number: 0x800CCC61.
The Exchange Server Internet Mail Service is configured to allow connections using authentication, and the Outlook client has not been configured to send authentication credentials.
Configure the Outlook client to send authentication credentials as follows:
Use same setting as my Incoming Mail server: The authentication credentials found in the Incoming Mail Server option.
Log on using: Enter the user account and password of the current user.
Log on using Secure Password Authentication: An authentication credential will be displayed every time a message is sent.
Exchange Server 5.5 provides the option to allow connections to the Internet Mail Service using credentials. The option can be set in the Internet Mail Service Properties, on the Connections tab, by clicking the Accept Connections options. Selecting "Only from hosts using Authentication" and "Clients can only submit if homed on this server," requires any POP3 or IMAP client to be verified prior to allowing connections.
