IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry.
Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if
a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring
the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help
topic in Regedt32.exe.
SYMPTOMS
Changes made to the following option in the Microsoft Outlook 98 Tools menu, under Options, Mail Services may not take effect as expected:
When online, synchronize all folders upon exiting.
CAUSE
The AutoSyncDisable value may be enabled in the Registry under the following key:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook\Options\General
RESOLUTION
One work around to this behavior is to configure this option prior to enabling the AutoSyncDisable value in the Registry. To do this, follow these steps:
- Start Microsoft Outlook.
- In the Tools menu, click Options, then click Mail Services, set the Online Synchronization option
to the setting you want.
- Exit Microsoft Outlook.
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor
can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And
Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete
Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in
Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.
If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency
Repair Disk (ERD).
- Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
- Locate the following key in the registry:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Outlook\Options\General
- On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry
value:
Value Name: AutoSyncDisable
Data Type: DWORD
Value: 1
- Quit Registry Editor.
- Start Microsoft Outlook.
Microsoft Outlook will now behave according to the setting you chose in Step 2, regardless of whether or not the option is enabled or disabled.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed
at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION
The AutoSyncDisable value controls the options available in the Enable Offline Access group on the Mail Services tab found in the Tools menu under Options. When enabled, the only option available in the Enable Offline Access group is the following:
When online, synchronize all folders upon exiting.
Microsoft Outlook will continue to use the value of this option as it was set prior to enabling the AutoSyncDisable value.
