XCON: NDR Shows the Exchange DN of User Instead of X.400 Address

SYMPTOMS

When you send messages using a Personal Distribution List to an invalid recipient on a remote site, you receive a non-delivery report (NDR) showing the the intended recipient's X.500 Distinguished Name (DN) ID instead of the X.400 address.

An example NDR showing this problem:


   From: System Administrator
   Sent: Friday, June 12, 1998 5:37 PM
   To: c=US;a=;p=Microsoft;o=Laptop;dda:MSXCHNGE=//o=MICROSOFT//ou=Laptop
   //cn=Recipients//cn=101300;
   Subject: Undeliverable: Test message

   Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

   Subject: Test message
   Sent: 6/12/98 5:35 PM

   The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

   c=US;a=;p=Microsoft;o=Laptop;dda:MSXCHNGE=//o=MICROSOFT//ou=Laptop

   The recipient name is not recognized

CAUSE

The function call, EcDeliverReport, no longer returns the MH_T_DIRECTORY_NAME attribute to the Exchange Server information store after the application of Exchange Server 5.0 Service Pack 2 or Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 1.


RESOLUTION

Exchange Server 5.0

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.0 service pack that contains this fix.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.0 Service Pack 2 and Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 Service Pack 1.
