ID: Q197059
|
The information in this article applies to:
-
Microsoft Exchange Server, versions 4.0, 5.0, 5.5
IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry.
Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if
a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring
the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key"
Help topic in Regedt32.exe.
SUMMARY
POP3 clients cannot gain access to a Microsoft Exchange Server information
store when logging on using clear text authentication and the
authentication type for the POP3 interface in Exchange Server is configured
to be MCIS Authentication (meaning it will use Membership Server). In
Exchange Server 5.5, there is currently no provision to allow clear text
authentication through Membership Server.
MORE INFORMATION
Microsoft recognizes the need for POP3 clients to be authenticated with
clear text authentication through Membership Server. We have modified
Exchange Server 5.5 so that it is now possible for POP3 clients to access
an Exchange Server using clear text authentication through Membership
Server.
To obtain this feature, obtain the latest service pack for Exchange Server
version 5.5. For more information, please see the following article in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base:
