BUG: DSHELL Error in FPW 2.6a with Long Folder Name

SYMPTOMS

When any menu option in the Start Menu folder has a name greater than 49 characters, running the FoxPro 2.6a for Windows setup program to install an executable causes the following error in Windows 95/98:

DSHELL An error has occurred in your program. To keep working anyway,
click Ignore and save your work in a new file. To quit this program,
click Close. You will lose information you entered since your last Save.
Selecting Ignore does nothing. Select Close then gives Windows error:
DSHELL X This program has performed an illegal operation
and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
Selecting Details button gives:
DSHELL caused a general protection fault in module MSCUISTF.DLL at 0004:00000532.
In Windows NT 4.0, the following error messages appear:
An error has occurred in your application. If you choose Ignore, you should save your work in a new file.
If you choose Close, your application will terminate.
Choosing the Close button, causes the following error:
DSHELL caused a General Protection Fault in module MSCOMSTF.dll at <memory address>
Choose Close. DSHELL will close.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem does not occur in Visual FoxPro 3.0b for Windows.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Create a simple project that invokes a WAIT WINDOW from a program. Build this into an executable file.


  2. Run the Setup Wizard to create the setup disks.


  3. Select the Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0 Start menu.


  4. Select Settings.


  5. Select Taskbar and Start Menu.


  6. Select Start Menu Programs tab.


  7. Select Advanced button.


  8. Select menu File, New Folder.


  9. Add the new long folder with a name over 49 characters under the START MENU, Programs folder.


  10. Run the FoxPro 2.6a setup program created in step 2.


  11. The errors mentioned in the SYMPTOMS section appears while the setup program runs.
