SYMPTOMS

If you have an open menu in an Office 97 program and you move the mouse pointer out of the program window and onto the desktop, you may receive the following error message:

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module COMCTL32.DLL


This error message occurs only when the program is running in a window (is not maximized).


CAUSE

This error message can occur if you have version 2.0 of the IntelliPoint software installed and you have enabled the Focus or SmartSpeed option (or both options) on the StepSavers tab in the Mouse tool in Control Panel.


RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click Mouse.


  3. Click the Focus and SmartSpeed check boxes to clear them.


  4. Close the Control Panel window.


  5. Restart your computer.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
