This article describes how to turn on, configure, and use the Microsoft
IntelliPoint software wheel panning and scrolling features.

To use the wheel panning and scrolling features, you need the following
software and hardware:
- A Microsoft IntelliMouse, Microsoft IntelliMouse Trackball, or
Microsoft Wheel Mouse.
- The IntelliPoint software version 2.0 or later for programs that
are designed to use the IntelliPoint wheel features.

The IntelliPoint software version 2.2 for programs that are not
designed to use the IntelliPoint wheel features. The IntelliPoint
software version 2.2 includes the Universal Scrolling feature, which
provides wheel scrolling and panning functionality to programs that
do not have native support for the wheel.

If you are using the IntelliPoint software version 2.2, turn on the
Universal Scrolling feature to scroll in programs that do not have native
support for the IntelliPoint wheel features. To do this, follow these
steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click
Control Panel.
- Double-click Mouse.
- Click the Wheel tab.
- Under Wheel, click the Turn On The Wheel check box to
select it.
- Under Wheel Button, click the Turn On The Wheel Button
check box to select it.
- Under Universal Scrolling, click the Turn On Universal
Scrolling check box to select it.
- Click OK, and then close Control Panel.
NOTE: If you are unable to scroll in a program when you enable the
Universal Scrolling feature, verify that the program you are using is
not in the Exceptions For Universal Scrolling list.

To configure and use the wheel scrolling feature, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click
Control Panel.
- Double-click Mouse.
- Click the Wheel tab.
- Under Wheel, click Settings.
- Choose the wheel settings you want, and then click OK.
- Click OK, and then close Control Panel.
- Open a window with active scroll bars, and then roll the wheel to
scroll in the window.
To use the wheel panning feature, follow these steps:
- Open a window with active scroll bars.
- Press the wheel button. The pointer changes to a single arrow or
multiple arrows that point in the directions you are able to
pan.
- Move the pointing device in the direction you want to pan.
- When you are finished panning, press the wheel button again to turn
off the panning feature.
