WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

Use Registry Editor to remove the registry entries for your previous pointing device. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Remove the following registry keys

    Mouse\<nnnn>
where <nnnn> is an incremental 4-digit number starting at 0000.

  2. Remove the following registry keys, if they exist

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\Root\*PNP<nnnn>\<####>
where <nnnn> is a four-character alphanumeric string, and <####> is an incremental four-digit number starting at 0000.

Delete any key in which "mouse" (including the quotation marks) appears in the right pane of Registry Editor.

  6. Open the following registry keys, if they exist:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\Serenum\MSH0010\BIOS&*PNP<nnnn>
    where <nnnn> is a four-character alphanumeric string.

Delete any key in which "mouse" (including the quotation marks) appears in the right pane of Registry Editor.

  8. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

  9. Click the Device Manager tab.

  10. Double-click Mouse.
