Cannot Uninstall Internet Explorer 5 Compatibility Mode Feature

SYMPTOMS

You may be unable to uninstall the Internet Explorer 5 Compatibility mode feature.


RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, uninstall Internet Explorer 5 to return to the previous version of Internet Explorer, and then install Internet Explorer 5 again.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).


To manually remove Internet Explorer 4.0 Compatibility Mode, follow these steps:
  1. Delete the "Internet Explorer-4 Compatible" folder and its contents.


  2. Use Registry Editor to delete the following registry key:


  3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Compatibility Mode
  4. Delete the "Previous Internet Explorer Ver. 4" shortcut icon from the Internet Explorer folder on the Start menu.


  5. Run the Internet Explorer 5.0 Repair Tool in Add/Remove Programs.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

Uninstalling Internet Explorer 5 to return to the previous version of Internet Explorer removes the "Internet Explorer 4 - Compatibility Mode" folder. When you install Internet Explorer 5 using a typical installation, Compatibility mode is not installed.
