Err Msg: Iexplore Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Shell32.dll

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to run Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:

Iexplore caused an Invalid Page Fault in Shell32.dll


CAUSE

This error message can occur if you are using a Compaq Armada 1500 series laptop computer with Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2). The Compaq Safety and Comfort Guide software included with the Compaq Armada 1500 series laptop computer creates registry entries that are not compatible with Internet Explorer version 4.0 and 4.01.


RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).
To work around this issue, follow these steps:

NOTE: When you delete these registry values, the Compaq Safety and Comfort Guide software may no longer work correctly. Please contact Compaq to inquire about a possible update to address this issue.

  1. Using Registry Editor, delete all values in the following registry key:
    HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer\StreamMRU


  2. Delete all keys in the following registry key:
    HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer\Streams
