SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install the 16-bit version of Internet Explorer for Windows NT 3.51, you may receive the following error message:

   32 Bit Microsoft Internt Explorer Check

   Setup has determined the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer is
   installed on your system.

   Setup cannot install the 16-bit version until the 32-bit version has
   been uninstalled.

   If you wish to install the 16-bit version, Press Exit and uninstall
   the 32-bit version.

When you click OK, Setup stops.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Shdocvw.dll file is present in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, move, delete, or rename the Shdocvw.dll file in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder, and then run Internet Explorer Setup again. For information about moving, deleting, or renaming a file, please consult the online Help in Windows.

The Shdocvw.dll file is the 32-bit version of the file used by Internet Explorer for Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. This file is not used by Internet Explorer for Windows 3.1 or Windows NT 3.51. These versions use the Shdocvw16.dll file.
