SYMPTOMS

When you reinstall Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4) after installing Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 (SP2), you may receive the following error message when you restart your computer after Windows NT 4.0 SP4 Setup:

To resolve known Windows NT 4.0 Year 2000 issues you must install the following versions (or greater) of the programs listed below:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1

To work around this problem, click No to continue the logon process.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.01 SP2 for Windows NT 4.0 and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4.

After you install Windows NT 4.0 SP4, the "Y2ksetup.exe /d" program is run to determine which installed components are year 2000 compliant. When Windows NT 4.0 SP4 was released, Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1 (SP1) was the latest version of Internet Explorer. The Y2ksetup.exe program does not recognize Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 so it suggests that you install Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1.
