When you configure Internet Explorer to automatically connect to your Internet service provider (ISP), you may receive the following error message after your modem dials:
Unable to connect because of a configuration error
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the connection is configured to open a terminal window after dialing. The dialer program Internet Explorer uses cannot open a terminal window.
RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods:
Method 1
Connect to your ISP using Dial-up Networking, and then start Internet Explorer. For information about how to connect to the Internet using Dial-Up Networking, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
How to Connect to Internet Service Providers from Windows NT 4.0
Method 2
Obtain or create a script file that automatically logs on to your ISP. Contact your ISP to inquire about the availability of a script file.
To configure a Dial-Up Networking connection to use a script file, follow these steps:
- Double-click My Computer.
- Double-click Dial-up Networking.
- Click the phonebook entry for your ISP.
- Click More, and then click "Edit entry and modem Properties."
- On the Script tab, click "Run this script" and then click the script file you want to use.
NOTE- It may be necessary to add delay 1 to the end of the script file for better connectivity.
