Error Message Connecting to OpenVMS FTP Server

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to connect to an OpenVMS FTP server using Internet Explorer with a modem connection, you may receive the following error message:

Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site ftp://ftp.site.com/.
The server returned extended information
When you attempt to connect to an OpenVMS FTP server using Internet Explorer using a proxy server connection, you may receive the following error message:
Extended Server Error Message :

200 TYPE set to IMAGE.
200 PORT command successful.
550 file specification syntax error
If you issue a "CD /" command from an FTP command line, you may receive the following error message:
550-Failed to set default directory to /.
550 bad directory file format


CAUSE

Internet Explorer automatically issues a "CWD /" command upon a successful connection to an FTP server to place the client at the root of the FTP share. The command-line FTP client also issues a "CWD" command when you type "CD" at the prompt.

The OpenVMS file system architecture does not support the "CWD" command.
