HTTP 1.1 Resume Feature for Internet Explorer Setup May Not Work

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Safe Recovery option, Active Setup may download files again instead of continuing from the point at which the file download stopped last time.

CAUSE

There are some conditions that prevent this feature from resuming properly:

• The computer must have versions of the Wininet.dll and Urlmon.dll files from Internet Explorer 4.0 or later for this feature to work. If you are installing from a computer with no browser or a browser other than Internet Explorer 4.0 or later, this feature is not available.



• Internet Explorer must have enough Internet cache space to store the file. Because the resume feature uses the Internet cache to store the partially downloaded file, the resume feature does not work if the cache is purged or if the cache settings do not accommodate the file.



• Internet Explorer has a feature that allows Setup to change the download server automatically in the case of a very slow connection. If Setup switches servers, the partially downloaded file from the previous server is not available for the resume feature.



• This feature is available only when you are using an HTTP connection to the server. If the connection to the server uses an FTP or UNC connection, the resume feature is not available.

Internet Explorer 5 includes support for the HTTP 1.1 resume feature. This feature allows Active Setup to continue downloading a partially downloaded file. In cases where the resume feature does not work, Active Setup starts the download from the beginning of the last file attempted.

NOTE: Active Setup does not support the FTP resume feature. The resume feature works only with an HTTP connection.
