Internet Explorer Appears to Stop Responding When Started

SYMPTOMS

When you start Internet Explorer after upgrading from Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2 to Internet Explorer 5, Internet Explorer may appear to stop responding (hang), and you may experience one of the following symptoms:


CAUSE

This issue can occur if Internet Explorer is trying to locate a proxy server. This can occur for either of the following reasons:


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, disable Proxy Auto-Discovery. To do so, use the appropriate method:

Connect to Internet Using Dial-Up Networking Connection

If you connect to the Internet using a Dial-Up Networking connection:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet.


  2. Click the Connection tab, click the appropriate connection, and then click Settings.


  3. Click the Automatically detect settings check box to clear it, click OK, and then click OK.


Connect to Internet Using Local Area Network (LAN)

If you connect to the Internet using a LAN:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet.


  2. Click the Connection tab, and then click LAN Settings.


  3. Click the Automatically detect settings check box to clear it, click OK, and then click OK.


  4. Restart your computer.


To work around this issue, quit Internet Explorer, and then restart it.
