Internet Explorer 5 offers the following two new ways to save Web pages that include embedded components:

Web Page, Complete

When you save a Web page as "Web page, complete," a folder with the same name as the Hypertext Markup Language (.html) file is created in the target folder. This folder contains page elements such as images and sounds. The relative links to embedded content in the Web page are re-written to point to the contents of this new folder. Absolute links such as a hyperlink to another Web page are not re-written. As long as the folder is kept with its corresponding .htm file, the opened file includes the referenced images.

Web Archive

When you save a Web page as "Web archive," the Web page saves this information in Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension HTML (MHTML) format with a .mht file extension. All relative links in the Web page are remapped and the embedded content is included in the .mht file, rather than being saved in a separate folder. The absolute references or hyperlinks on the Web page remain unchanged and the .mht file is viewed using Internet Explorer.

MHTML enables you to send and receive Web pages and other HTML documents using e-mail programs such as Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Outlook Express. MHTML enables you to embed images directly into the body of your e-mail messages rather than attaching them to the message.

NOTE: "Web archive" is available only if Outlook Express is installed. The ability to save a Web page as a Web archive file is provided by the Inetcomm.dll file (the Microsoft Internet Messaging API file), which is installed by Microsoft Outlook Express 5.

Language Encoding

Encoding refers to the character set used to display a language. The United States is associated with the Western European character set. The Western European character set contains the letters and symbols for English, French, Spanish, and Italian.

To see a list of all the character sets available in Internet Explorer, click Encoding on the View menu, and then click More. If an uninstalled character set is chosen, the Install on Demand (IOD) feature prompts you to install it. This enables you to control the character set encoding being used to render a Web page.

History Explorer Bar

A new View menu within the History Explorer bar gives you the ability to change the sort order of the Web page entries by choosing one of the following settings:
When you perform a search within the History Explorer bar, the following folders are searched:
The results can be added as a favorite or opened in a new window when you right-click an appropriate entry in the History Explorer bar.

Search Explorer Bar

When you perform a new search by clicking New on the Search Explorer bar, the following search options are available:
NOTE: The "Find in encyclopedia" and "Find in Newsgroups" search options are not shown by default. To display these options, click More in the Search Explorer bar.

When you click the "Previous searches" option, the last ten searches are displayed. These saved searches are also available in a list when you double-click in the "Find a web page" box.

When you click Next, the query is executed using any of the currently configured search engines, and then it cycles to the next search engine. You can manually select which search engine you want next by clicking the search engine in the list.

Favorites

Adding a favorite in Internet Explorer 5 is easier than in previous versions of Internet Explorer. To add a favorite, simply click OK in the Add Favorite dialog box. To make a favorite available for offline use, click the Make available offline check box to select it.

AutoComplete Feature

The AutoComplete feature suggests possible matches for entries you type in the Address bar, a Web page form, or a user name or password box on a Web page. For additional information about the AutoComplete feature, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Windows Radio Bar Toolbar

Internet Explorer 5 includes a Windows Radio toolbar that provides streaming radio playback. By default, the Radio toolbar is not displayed when the browser is started. To display the Radio toolbar when the browser is started, follow these steps in Internet Explorer:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.


  2. Click the Advanced tab.


  3. Under Multimedia, click the Always Show Internet Explorer Radio Bar check box to select it.


NOTE: This option displays the Radio toolbar provided you enabled enabled it by clicking Toolbars on the View menu, and then clicking Radio.

Hypertext Markup Language Editor

You can designate your default HTML editor. You can also choose additional editing programs by clicking the Edit button on the Internet Explorer toolbar. To change or set the default HTML editor, follow these steps in Internet Explorer:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.


  2. Click the Programs tab.


  3. In the HTML editor box, click the editor you want.


  4. Click OK.


Repair Tool

FTP and Web-Based Folders

FTP Folders is a new shell extension in Internet Explorer 5 that enables you to browse FTP Web sites in Windows Explorer.

Approved Sites

Web sites listed in this section are not required to meet Platform for Internet Content Selection (PICS) labeling. PICS is a World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standard for content labeling. PICS is essentially a language for creating a ratings system. To add Web sites to the Approved Sites list, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click Internet Options.


  3. Click the Content tab.


  4. Click Enable. If Content Advisor is already enabled, click Settings, and then type your supervisor password.


  5. Click the Approved Sites tab, type the Web site address, and then choose whether you want others to always or never have access to this site.


Hotmail Integration

You can select Hotmail as your default e-mail program. To set a default e-mail program, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click Internet Options.


  3. Click the Programs tab.


  4. In the E-mail box, click the e-mail program you want.


  5. Click OK.
