This article describes how to restore a missing Internet Explorer 4 desktop icon with the Active Desktop Update component installed.

1. Click Start, point to Setting, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. In the list of installed programs, click Internet Explorer 4.0, and
then click Add/Remove.
4. Click "Remove the Windows Desktop Update," and then click OK.
5. When you are prompted to restart your computer, do so.
6. Repeat steps 1-3.
7. Click "Add the Windows Desktop Update," and then click OK.
8. When you are prompted to restart your computer, do so.

Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).
1. Use Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe) to locate the following registry
key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}\
ShellFolder
2. Modify the data value for the Attributes value from 1000022 to 22. The
entry type should remain hexadecimal.
3. Save the change and quit Registry Editor.
4. Restart your computer.
