Service Pack 4 Cryptography Components Are UninstalledID: Q227011
|
After you uninstall Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 from your Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack (SP4)-based computer, your SP4 cryptography components may be uninstalled.
This problem can occur if you install Internet Explorer version 4.01 Service Pack 1 or Internet Explorer version 4.01 SP2 before you install Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 SP4.
To work around this problem, install Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 SP4 after you complete Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 Setup.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
Protecting information by transforming it (or encrypting it) into an unreadable format is called cyphertext. Only users who possess a secret key can decipher (or decrypt) the message into plain, readable text. Encrypted messages can sometimes be deciphered by cryptanalysis (code breaking), although modern cryptography techniques are virtually unbreakable. As the Internet and other forms of electronic communication become more popular, electronic security is becoming increasingly important. Cryptography is used to protect e-mail messages, credit card information, and corporate data. Cryptography systems can be broadly classified into symmetric-key systems that use a single key that both the sender and recipient have, and public-key systems that use two keys, a public key known to everyone and a private key that only the recipient of messages uses.
