SYMPTOMS

When you right-click a link to a Microsoft Excel (.xls) file and then click "Open in a new window", a new instance of Internet Explorer may start, but it may display the Blank.htm file instead of the Excel file. Also, Excel may now be running but not visible, and if you quit Excel, you may be prompted to save changes to the Excel file, even if you have not altered the file.

This problem can occur if the "Open web document in place" feature for Excel worksheets is disabled.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, enable the "Open web document in place" feature for Excel worksheets:

  1. In Internet Explorer, click Options on the View menu, click the Programs tab, and then click the File Types tab.

  2. In the Registered File Types box, click Microsoft Excel Worksheet, click Edit, and then click to select the Open web document in place check box.

  3. Click OK, and then quit Internet Properties.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
