To configure Internet Explorer to work with AOL as your ISP, follow these steps:

  1. If Internet Explorer is not already installed, download it from the following Microsoft Web site and install it:

    http://www.microsoft.com/ie/download/




  2. Install the America Online software. AOL is available on CD-ROM or can be downloaded from the following AOL Web site:

    http://www.aol.com/

    This software installs an America Online adapter in Network properties so you can make a 32-bit Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) connection to America Online.

  3. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  4. Double-click Internet, click the Connection or Connections tab, and then use the appropriate method:

    NOTE: With AOL 4.0, you may need to enable the Access the Internet using a proxy server option by clicking Advanced, clicking the Use same proxy server for all protocols check box to clear it, clearing the contents of all boxes under Servers, and then clicking OK. When you are prompted to turn off the proxy connection, click No.

    Click LAN settings, click Advanced, click the Use same proxy server for all protocols check box to clear it, clear the contents of all boxes under Servers, and then click OK.

    Internet Explorer 4.x and Windows 98

    Click Connect to the Internet using a local area network, click the Access the Internet using a proxy server check box to clear it, and then click OK.

    Internet Explorer 3.02

    Click the Connect through a proxy server check box to clear it, and then click OK.


  5. Connect and log on to America Online using the America Online software.


  6. Start Internet Explorer.


NOTE: Internet Explorer cannot be configured to automatically dial AOL when AOL is used as your ISP.
