SYMPTOMS

When you install the 16-bit Internet Explorer for Windows 3.1 from a package created using the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) 3.2a, the Setup program terminates unexpectedly and Setup does not complete. This happens when you use either a CD-ROM package or a download package, but it does not occur with the floppy disk-based package.

When you run the Setup for Internet Explorer, the initial Setup screen appears. It is titled "Preparing for Setup" and contains the message "Preparing to run Internet Explorer Setup. Please wait..." This screen appears for a few seconds and then disappears. Setup does not continue and no other actions occur.

CAUSE

The problem occurs when the IEAK 3.2a Wizard is run on a Windows 95 system that has Novell's Client 32 for Windows 95 software installed. With the Client 32 software, the 16-bit Windows 3.1 download and CD-ROM packages are corrupted during their generation. When the packages are run, the Setup program starts and displays a screen that says "Preparing for Setup". However, this screen disappears, and the setup for Internet Explorer does not complete.

WORKAROUND

To work around the problem, either remove the Novell Client 32 for Windows 95 from the system on which the IEAK will run, or run the IEAK Wizard from a system that does not have the Novell Client 32 installed. The 16-bit Internet Explorer Package for Windows 3.1 must be recreated after the Novell client has been removed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with Microsoft Internet Explorer Administration Kit version 3.2a. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Client 32 for Windows 95 is manufactured by Novell, a vendor independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability.
