Internet Explorer Service Pack 1 changes the method the Wininet.dll file in Internet Explorer uses to resolve Internet Protocol (IP) addresses to Web addresses. Internet Explorer uses the Wininet.dll file to retrieve a list of IP addresses from a multihomed server or a Web farm. The Wininet.dll file retrieves this list from the multihomed server computer or Web farm by making a GETHOSTBYNAME call to the computer or Web farm. The Wininet.dll file receives the list, randomizes the list, and then attempts to connect only to the first IP address.
Internet Explorer Service Pack 1 changes the behavior of the Wininet.dll file. Once the Wininet.dll file makes the GETHOSTBYNAME call to receive a list of IP addresses, it does not randomize the list before the Wininet.dll file attempts to connect to an IP address. The Wininet.dll file attempts to connect to each IP address in the list in the order in which they are returned by the GETHOSTBYNAME call. The Wininet.dll file can also optimize the order it processes the addresses based on the IP route table.
A multihomed server is a computer with two or more separate network cards that can be assigned different IP addresses.
