BUG: Cannot Install Virtual Machine on System With No VM

ID: Q219053

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you install the Microsoft virtual machine (Microsoft VM) build 2436 on a computer that does not have the Microsoft virtual machine already installed, the following error message appears:

Newer version of the Microsoft VM detected.
Installation cannot proceed.

CAUSE

The Microsoft VM installation program (Msjavx86.exe) compares the version number of <Windir>\System32\Msjava.dll with the version it is installing. If the msjava.dll file is not found, the error dialog box appears.

NOTE: The error dialog box is also displayed if the Msjava.dll on the computer is newer than the 2436 build. In this case, you should not install the older Microsoft VM over the new Microsoft virtual machine.

RESOLUTION

If you do not have the Microsoft VM installed on your computer and you are receiving the error dialog box, run the setup program with the following command line switches:

C:\>msjavx86.exe /n:v

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
