FIX: Upgrading VJ++ 6.0 with SP2 Changes PID to All Zeroes

The information in this article applies to:


SYMPTOMS

When upgrading Visual J++ 6.0 with Service Pack 2, the Product ID (PID) changes to all zeros.


RESOLUTION

The only solution currently available to enable you to retain the PID is to remove Visual J++ 6.0 and then reinstall it. Write down the PID when instructed to do so. After you install the application, reinstall Service Pack 2.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

This bug was corrected in Visual Studio 6.0 Service Pack 3.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Install Visual J++ 6.0 with typical installation settings.


  2. Install Service Pack 2.


  3. After restarting the computer, start Visual J++. Click About Help under the Help menu. Note that the PID is all zeroes.
