SUMMARY

The current version (or build number) of the Microsoft Win32 Microsoft virtual machine (Microsoft VM) is 3181. The Microsoft VM is available from the following Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/java/

Using Internet Explorer, go to the Web page and click Downloads. It is important that you do not have the Microsoft VM currently in use when you attempt to update it. If you have run a Java applet in this session of Internet Explorer, please exit Internet Explorer and go directly to the Web page above. If you are using Internet Explorer 4.x with Active Desktop enabled, you might need to restart your computer to unload the Microsoft VM.

The download page causes Internet Explorer to download the most recent version of the Microsoft VM and install it on the client computer.

To find the version of a file in Windows Explorer, find the file, right-click the file name, and click Properties.

If you suspect one or more of these files is out of date, simply go to the Web site listed above and complete the setup.

If you receive an error during setup or the process does not solve the problems you are having with the Microsoft VM, the next step is to back up the files list above and remove the originals from your system. After you have done that, restart your computer and go to the Web site listed in the SUMMARY section of this article to obtain the files.

If you have installed a newer version of the Microsoft VM, a dialog box might appear that asks you whether you want to overwrite newer files in the virtual machine. Answer Yes to all dialog boxes that appear with this question to fully reinstall this version of the Microsoft VM.
