This article describes how to configure Microsoft Outlook Express to work with MSN, The Microsoft Network. Outlook Express is an e-mail and newsgroup reader program.

To configure Outlook Express to work with MSN, use one of the following methods. If you connect through a LAN or an Internet service provider (ISP) other than MSN, use method 1. If you are connecting by modem (ISDN or analog) to MSN, use method 2.

Method 1

To configure Outlook Express to work with an existing MSN account, use the following steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Internet Explorer, and then click Outlook Express.


  2. If the MSN Sign-In screen appears, click Cancel.


  3. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.


  4. On the Mail tab, click the MSN Mail account, and then click Properties.


  5. On the General tab, type the appropriate information about your account in the Name, Organization, E-mail Address, and Reply Address boxes. Note that entries in the Organization and Reply Address boxes are optional.


  6. On the Servers tab, type secure.smtp.email.msn.com in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) box.


  7. In the Incoming Mail (POP3) box, type pop3.email.msn.com.


  8. Click Log on using Secure Password Authentication.


  9. On the Connection tab, click Connect using Internet Explorer's or a 3rd party dialer.


  10. Click OK, and then click Close.


  11. Minimize Outlook Express.


  12. Right-click the The Internet icon on the desktop, click Properties, and then click the Connection tab. a. If you connect to the Internet using a local area network, click "Connect to the Internet using a local area network." b. If you connect to the Internet using a modem, click "Connect to the Internet using a modem." Click Settings and verify that the Dial-Up connection for your Internet service provider is selected in the "Use the following Dial-Up Networking connection" box. If MSN is your Internet service provider, the Dial-Up connection should be "MSN" (without quotation marks).


  13. Click OK until you return to Windows.


Method 2



To configure a new account for Outlook Express, use the following steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Internet Explorer, and then click Outlook Express.


  2. If the MSN Sign-In screen appears, click Cancel.


  3. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.


  4. Click Add, and then click Mail.


  5. In the Display Name box, type your name, and then click Next.


  6. In the E-mail Address box, type your MSN e-mail address, and then click Next.


  7. In the "Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server" box, type the following server address: pop3.email.msn.com


  8. In the "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server" box, type the following server address: smtp.email.msn.com NOTE: If you gain access to MSN through a third-party ISP or LAN, type the following server address: secure.smtp.email.msn.com


  9. Click Next.


  10. Click "Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)," and then click Next.


  11. In the Internet Mail Account Name box, type "MSN" (without quotation marks), and then click Next.


  12. Click "I will establish my Internet connection manually," and then click Next.


  13. Click Finish, and then click Close.


  14. Close Outlook Express.


  15. Right-click the The Internet icon on the desktop, click Properties, and then click the Connection tab. a. If you connect to the Internet using a local area network, click "Connect to the Internet using a local area network." b. If you connect to the Internet using a modem, click "Connect to the Internet using a modem." Click Settings and verify that the Dial-Up connection for your Internet service provider is selected in the "Use the following Dial-Up Networking connection" box. If MSN is your Internet service provider, the Dial-Up connection should be "MSN" (without quotation marks).


  16. Click OK until you return to Windows.
