This article describes how to change your identification in Microsoft Chat.
Your identification within Microsoft Chat uniquely identifies you to other people on the chat server. Some servers allow registration of a nickname, which allows only one user to user that nickname. However, other servers do not register nicknames and anyone can use any nickname. In those cases, your identity allows others to recognize you.
Your identification on the server consists of a combination of your Internet protocol (IP) address, the Directory Name Service (DNS) address of your Internet service provider (ISP), and your electronic mail name before the at sign (@)in your electronic mail address. If you do not enter your e-mail address on the Personal Info tab in the Microsoft Chat Options dialog box, your identification is based on your nickname in combination with your IP address and DNS address.
To change your identification in Microsoft Chat, follow these steps:
1. On the View menu, click Options.
2. Click the Personal Info tab, type your identification in the Real Name
box, and then type your nickname in the Nickname box.
3. Type your e-mail address in the Email Address box.
Note that Microsoft Chat 2.0 uses your user name (the name you use to log on to your computer) for your identification.
Microsoft recommends that you upgrade to Microsoft Chat 2.5. Microsoft Chat 2.5 is available for free download from Microsoft at the following Web address:
http://www.microsoft.com/ie/chat/
