SUMMARY

The following is a list of power-on-self-test (POST) error codes that may appear at start-up. These errors are generated by the system prior to the loading of the operating system and usually need to be resolved for successful system usage.

17XX Fixed Disk Drive/Adapter Errors.

        1701    Fixed disk POST error.
        1702    Fixed disk adapter error.
        1703    Fixed disk drive error.
        1704    Fixed disk adapter or drive errors.
        1705    Fixed disk adapter, no record found.
        1706    Fixed disk error, write fault.
                Are two heads selected, are voltages correct?
        1707    Fixed disk/adapter, TRACK 0 error.
                Is the drive formatted?
        1708    Fixed disk/adapter error, bad select error.
                Is the drive formatted?
        1709    Fixed disk adapter error, bad BCC.
                Check controller.
        1710    Fixed disk/adapter error, read buffer override.
                Check controller and/or drive interleave.
        1711    Fixed disk drive error, Bad address mark.
                Check controller and Drive low level format.
        1712    Fixed disk/adapter error, bad address mark.

        1714    Drive select error.  Check jumpers and the drive
                cables.
        1726    Data compare error, check format.
                Check for added hard or surface errors.
        1770    Surface errors, check for added hard errors.
        1780    Fixed disk 0 failure.*  Check data cable and power

                *178X errors generally indicate that the drive has
                not been low-level formatted or that the drive has
                dropped or no longer recognizes the disk
                controller information about the drive.
                *179X errors usually indicate that the drive
                lacks a partition structure or an MS-DOS format.

104XX PS/2 ESDI Fixed Disk Errors.

        10480 PS/2 ESDI Fixed Disk 0 error.
        10481 PS/2 ESDI Fixed Disk 1 error.
        10482 PS/2 ESDI Fixed Disk controller failure.
        10483 PS/2 ESDI Fixed Disk controller failure.
        10490 PS/2 ESDI Fixed Disk 0 error.
        10491 PS/2 ESDI Fixed Disk 1 error.

        * The PS/2 model drives require at least one disk
        from the system manufacturer, this being the reference
        disk that came with the system. However, the drive
        itself may have come with an installation disk that
        will be needed to successfully install the drive and/or
        the operating system.

18XX    I/O Expansion Unit Errors.

        1801    I/O expansion unit POST error.
        1810    Enable/Disable failure.
        1811    Extended card wrap test failed (disabled).
        1812    High order address lines failure (disabled).
        1813    Wait state failure (disabled).
        1814    Enable/Disable could not be set on.
        1815    Wait state failure (disabled).
        1816    Extended card wrap test failed (enabled).
        1817    High order address lines failure (enabled).
        1818    Disable not functioning.
        1819    Wait request switch not set correctly.
        1820    Receiver card wrap test failure.
        1821    Receiver high order address lines failure.

19XX    3270    PC attachment card errors.

The listing of error codes contained in this article are specific error codes for IBM hardware. These codes may or may not correspond correctly to non-IBM computers.
