PRJ98: Entering a Cost for a Resource Assignment Results in Zero

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you enter a cost for a resource assignment, it may revert back to zero.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

• The task you are assigning the cost to has a resource assigned at zero units, or the resource has zero work for the task.

-and-

• The option for Actual Costs are Always Calculated by Microsoft Project is turned off.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use the method appropriate for your situation:

• If you have not assigned any actual costs to the project, turn on the Actual Costs are Always Calculated by Microsoft Project option, assign the Cost, and then turn off the Actual Costs are Always Calculated by Microsoft Project option. (To set the Actual Costs are Always Calculated by Microsoft Project option, click Options on the Tools menu, and then click the Calculation tab.)
  
  NOTE: If you turn the Actual Costs are Always Calculated by Microsoft Project option back on, all actual costs are lost.



• If you have assigned actual costs to the project, you must assign the cost to the task as an Actual Cost when the task is completed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Project 98 for Windows, Service Release 1 (SR-1).
