Project Crashes When You Apply the PERT Chart View

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you apply the PERT Chart view, you may receive one of the following error messages.

In Windows 95

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

WINPROJ caused an invalid page fault in module WINPROJ.EXE at <address>.

In Windows NT

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

WINPROJ.EXE
Exception: access violation <number>, Address: <address>.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:

1. Open the project. On the File menu, click Save As.



2. In the Save As Type list, click Project Database (*.mpd).



3. Click Save.



4. In the Export Format dialog box, click Save.



5. On the File menu, click Close.



6. On the File menu, click Open.



7. Click to select the project database (*.mpd) file you just closed, and then click Open.



8. In the Import Format dialog box, click Open.



9. On the File menu, click Save As.



10. In the Save As Type list, click Project (*.mpp) format, and then click Save, to resave the project in the default format. If you are asked if you want to replace the existing file, click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Project 98 for Windows, Service Release 1 (SR-1).
