PRJ98: Crash When Opening Project Edited in Database

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98 Service Release 1 (SR-1), when you open a project that was saved in the database format, you may receive the following error message:

Windows 95/98

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the Problem persists, contact the program vendor.

When you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following

WINPROJ caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at <address>.

Windows NT

An Application Error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

Winproj.exe
Exception access violation (0xc0000005), address: <address>.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when all of the following conditions occur:

You open a project that was saved in a database format.

The project database was edited outside of Microsoft Project. For example, in Microsoft Access.

The External_Edit_Flag field in the Project_Information table of the database is not set to True (for Microsoft Access and Microsoft SQL Server) or 1 (for Oracle Server) after editing the project database.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, edit the database and change the External_Edit_Flag field in the Project_Information table. Change the value to True for Access and SQL Server databases or 1 for Oracle Server databases.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
