PRB: MSDN 6.0 and October 1998 Cause Error During Install

SYMPTOMS

During MSDN 6.0 or October 98 installation, you may get the following error:

   Title:   MSDN Setup Error

   CloseCollection g_ccolCollection.Open(collectionname) dwError = 5

NOTE: Sometimes dwError takes a different value but the same resolution applies.

CAUSE

The file Hhcolreg.dat may have become corrupted. This file is present under \Windows\Help\ directory on Windows 95/98 and \Winnt\Help\ on Windows NT- based systems.

RESOLUTION

Rename Hhcolreg.dat and then reinstall MSDN 6 or October 1998.

This is a troubleshooting step and not a solution to the problem. If the file is renamed please reinstall any other collections that you wish to use. This would include, but is not limited to the following:

Multiple release of MSDN
Other products that ship with a collection

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
