BUG: 32-bit Uncompressed AVIs Cause Unspecified Error

ID: Q184315

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use the Real Time Encoder to convert an existing 32-bit AVI containing uncompressed video, the Real Time Encoder generates a dialog box stating that an unspecified error has occurred.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft NetShow version 2.0.

Adobe Premiere is manufactured by Adobe Systems Incorporated, a vendor independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem typically occurs only when you try to use an uncompressed 32- bit AVI file as the source for the Real Time encoder. To determine whether your AVI is an uncompressed 32-bit AVI, perform the following procedure:

  1. Right-click on the AVI, and select Properties.

  2. Click the Details tab.

  3. On the Details tab, look at the information provided in the section labeled Video Format. It should state the following information: image size, color depth, bit rate, frames per second, and compression or codec used. If your AVI is using 32-bits for color depth AND states that it is uncompressed, you must use one of the above listed workarounds to convert the file to an ASF.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do one of the following:

- Use a video editing application such as AviEdit, available on www.microsoft.com, or a third-party product such as Adobe Premiere to compress the 32-bit AVI using a codec or decreasing the color depth.

-OR-

- If you want to create an ASF file for play-back from the hard disk drive, you can use the vidtoasf to create your ASF file. This command- line utility is included with the NetShow tools. For more information on using the vidtoasf utility, refer to the Asftools.hlp Help file, located in the \program files\Microsoft NetShow\Tools directory.
