Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 and Windows Media Server Templates Must be Modified

SYMPTOMS

When you start a broadcast presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint 2000, the following error message may occur:

Failed to connect to NetShow Encoder. Press Retry to try again.
When you click Retry, the same error message occurs. If you click the Details button, you will receive the following message:
Please see your system administrator. The following error message was returned from the NetShow encoder:

An attempt to acquire a network resource failed.
This error occurs when you run Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 on the same computer as Windows Media Services.


CAUSE

The default Windows Media Encoder audio and video templates that come with Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 use the same TCP/IP ports that Windows Media Server uses. These ports are 7007 and 1055.


WORKAROUND

To resolve this problem, update the audio and video templates by performing the following steps:

  1. Start Windows Explorer.


  2. Navigate to c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Broadcast. This may vary based on where you installed Microsoft Office.


  3. Double-click the Audio.asd template file to start the Windows Media Encoder.


  4. If you are using NetShow Services version 3.0, a dialog box appears informing you that an attempt to acquire a network resource failed. Click OK. If you are using Windows Media Encoder 4.0, a dialog box appears informing you that you are loading an ASD from an earlier version of the Encoder. Click OK. Next, you will receive the same dialog as the NetShow 3.0 Encoder. Click OK.


  5. Continue through the wizards and accept all the defaults.


  6. Click the Start button to make sure that the Encoder works.


  7. Stop the Encoder.


  8. From the File menu, click Save.


  9. Close the Encoder.


  10. Repeat steps 3 through 9 for the Video.asd file.


  11. Open your Microsoft PowerPoint presentation.


  12. If you have already scheduled a broadcast for the open presentation, from the SlideShow menu, point to Online Broadcast and select Change.


  13. Delete all previously scheduled presentations.


  14. Save your presentation and close Microsoft PowerPoint.



You should now be able to schedule and start broadcast presentations normally.
