When you try to import or link a table in a Microsoft Excel workbook, you may receive the following error message:
External table isn't in the expected format.
You may experience this problem when you try to import or link a table to an Excel workbook that uses functions from the Analysis ToolPak add-in.
Open the workbook in Excel and keep it open until you import or link to the workbook. You can then close Excel without receiving the error.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Access 97.
