SBFM98: Current Version of MS Excel Does Not Support SBFM

The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Small Business Financial Manager 98 for Microsoft Excel 97 included with:

    - Microsoft Office 97 Small Business Edition for Windows, version 2.0

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Setup program for the Microsoft Small Business Financial Manager 98 for Microsoft Excel 97, the following error message appears:

   The version of Excel currently installed on your machine does not
   support Small Business Financial Manager 98, please install the updated
   version also provided on this CD. After Excel is updated please run
   Small Business Financial Manager 98 Setup again.

When you click OK, the following error message appears:

   Microsoft Small Business Financial Manager was not completed
   successfully.

When you click OK, the Setup program does not continue.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if one of the following conditions is true:

You are running Microsoft Excel 97 from a network server.

    -or-
```
You are running Microsoft Excel 97 from a compact disc (CD).
```
    -or-
```
Microsoft Excel 97 is not installed on your computer.
```
    -or-
```
You are running the non-Service Release 1 (SR-1) version of Microsoft Excel 97.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, install Microsoft Excel 97 SR-1 on your computer, and then install Microsoft Small Business Financial Manager. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Remove the Run From Network Server or Run From CD installation of

   Microsoft Excel. To do this, follow these steps:

    a. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

    b. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. In the list of installed programs,
       click Microsoft Office 97, and then click Add/Remove. If you
       installed Microsoft Office from a CD, you are prompted to insert the
       first CD.

       If a dialog box notifies you that programs are running, quit the
       programs, and then click OK.

    c. In the Microsoft Office 97 Setup dialog box, click Remove All.

2. Install Microsoft Excel from your Microsoft Office 97 Small Business

   Edition version 2.0 compact disc to the local hard disk. To do this,
   do either of the following:

    - Insert the compact disc, click Microsoft Excel, and click
      Typical or Custom as the installation type.

       -or-

    - If the AutoPlay window does not appear, follow these steps.

       a. Click Start on the taskbar and click Run

       b. Type the following

             <drive>:\Excel\Setup.exe

          where <drive> is the letter of the CD-ROM drive.

       c. Click OK.

3. Run the Setup program for Microsoft Small Business Financial Manager

   from the Microsoft Office 97 Small Business Edition version 2.0 compact
   disc. To do this, do either of the following:

    - Insert the compact disc and click Small Business Financial Manager.

       -or-

    - If the AutoPlay window does not appear, follow these steps.

       a. Click Start on the taskbar and click Run

       b. Type the following

             <drive>:\Sbfm\Setup.exe

          where <drive> is the letter of the CD-ROM drive.

       c. Click OK.

STATUS

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Small Business Financial Manager 98 for Microsoft Excel 97.
